Power and Corruption

'That summons thee to heaven or to hell'. In the play MacBeth, the theme is Power and Corruption, especially when talking about MacBeth. MacBeth is so obsessed with power, he would do anything to keep it. MacBeth wants everyone who could possibly take the throne off him dead. 'Whiles I threat, he lives.' Act 2 Scene 1, line 61. This tells us that he has to kill someone so he can take power. MacBeth kills Duncan and frames his successors so that he is the only one that could be King. The witches have corrupted MacBeth and made him hungry for power.

Blood and Gore

'Safe in a ditch he bides'. Blood and gore plays a big part in the play MacBeth. Shakespeare uses blood and gore to emphasise the deaths and how important they are. 'With twenty trenching gashes on his head' is a very violent remark made by one of the murders to MacBeth. He does this to ensure MacBeth's belief in his story. Also because this is an important death it is described better and more vividly compared to when Lady MacBeth kills the guards. 'Is this a dagger that I see before me'.

Supernatural

'Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.' In this scene the witches are casting a spell to get in MacBeth's head. This is an excellent example of supernatural imagery. 'Eye of newt and toe of frog,' this is a small part of a spell the witches cast, this is supernatural because the witches are using magic and other things that would be impossible to in real life. 'Cool it with a baboon's blood, Then the charm is firm and good.'

Nature Imagery

'As hounds and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs,' Shakespeare uses nature imagery to further describe things. He uses nature imagery a lot in this play. 'All by the name of dogs.' In this scene MacBeth is trying to explain to the murderer that men are like dogs, they all have different attributes. This is also a metaphor because MacBeth is comparing men to being like different breeds of dogs. 'The valued file Distinguishes the swift, the slow, the subtle,The housekeeper, the hunter, every one According to the gift which bounteous nature Hath in him closed.'

Dramatic Irony

'This castle hath a pleasant seat;'. Dramatic Irony is when the audience knows something that the characters don't. Dramatic irony is used a lot in MacBeth to build tension and excitement. 'The air
Nimbly and sweetly' is used when King Duncan arrives at MacBeth's castle to describe that it is nice because lots of animals live there. But what he doesn't know is that he is actually walking into the place where he is going to get murdered, but we the audience know exactly what is going on. 'Recommends itself Unto our gentle senses.'

MacBeth and Banquo's Ghost video:

What, can the devil speak true? A foil is a character that takes the same path as the main character but makes a different decision. Banquo is a perfect foil to MacBeth. 'Banquo and Macbeth, all hail' Banquo was with MacBeth when he met the witches, the witches could have chosen Banquo instead of MacBeth. Also Banquo tells MacBeth that he is doomed if he trusts the witches, this is when Banquo makes a different decision than Macbeth and be comes a foil. Banquo was in the same situations as Macbeth, and if it weren't for the witches deciding to mess with MacBeth's head instead, Banquo would be doing the same thing as MacBeth

Heroic couplet-
1. 2 lines in iambic pentameter that rhyme
2. Sometimes at the end of a soliloquy
i.e. Hear it not  Duncan for it is a knell
That summons thee to heaven, or to hell.

2. 'I'm invisible, see? One of the invisible people'. In the book Stone Cold Link is a growing character, even through his difficult life. By living on the streets of London, Link became braver, more street wise and learnt how to survive with little money. When he lived on the streets in his home town he was scared and when to his sisters to get a meal and a good night sleep. But when he moved to London, all that changed, he had to survive on his own. By living in London Link made friends with Ginger, who helped him survive. He taught Link a lot and helped him find food and fend for himself. By moving to London Link's mindset had to change, he had to be aware of possible threats and had to concentrate on getting money more.

3. 'Slaves crammed together like sardines'. The book stone cold has a lot of description about different places that he has to live. The author describes different places in the story in different amounts of detail. At the beginning Link is living at home with his mum, his house is not described much, it just mentions that it is in 'Bradford, Yorkshire' and that's it. Whereas on page 70 it uses a lot more description when describing somewhere that he lived when he was homeless, for example 'the stench of too many damp, unwashed bodies' is description about a boat. That author does this because the house at the beginning is quite normal for most people, but a boat that homeless people pay to sleep in is not something that most of the readers have done so it is more important to describe. It isn't necessary to describe a not so important place place that isn't so important to the plot.

Cold, shivering and alone, the book Stone Cold describes this very well. Link is similar and different to real life people from the article because one, he feels sick and hungry but in the article it says lots of  the homeless take drugs. In the article it says you should give the homeless food rather than money because that is what they need most, and in the book it says Link was very hungry and uses cigarettes to make him feel better. In the article it says lots of homeless people have a drink or drug problem, but Link just buys food and healthy drinks, not things that are harmful to his body. In the book the author wants to make Link out as a good person because he is the protagonist and the author wants the reader to like him, and feel sorry for him.

In England alone 185,000 people are homeless because of low housing numbers and cuts in benefits. In England homeless numbers have rises  immensely in the last three years. Studies show that 1 in 10 people have been homeless for a period in their lives and and 1 in 50 have been homeless for at least 5 years. Once you are homeless it makes it very difficult for you to claim benefits or get a job, this means that once you have been sleepy rough for a certain amount of time you will get harder for you to fit back into society. Also people think the government should do more to help the homeless. Many people find the government is not doing enough and that they should take responsibility and help rough sleepers. Homelessness is a big problem and it is only get worse if someone doesn't do something about it.

'I'm invisible, see? One of the invisible people'. The book stone cold, the protagonist Link has shed a light on how bad homelessness actually is. Link has been very unlucky in his life, and a series of unfortunate events led him to become homeless on the streets of London. His mother got involved with the wrong man. He didn't like link at all and he made it quite clear that wanted Link to leave. The man had changes his mum, so she didn't back Link up but she just let him leave. The author has made the reader feel bad for Link, who had just become homeless because of his horrible step-dad, and makes you want to read on and find out if he will ever find a better life.

1.
Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market is a poem to describe the life and the death of the Tuna. The Juxtaposition between life and death is used to emphasise the difference between his exciting life and the boring ending. It says swam and then dead and tidal wave, dead. It uses these very close together to make you feel depressed when everything ends with death(as well as ending life it usually ends the stanza as well). This poem uses the word dead as an ending point, it gives information on the Tuna's life and then just ends it off.

2.
The author of Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market uses juxtaposition to make big differences between the Tuna's life were it was strong and powerful on then death. It says a 'well oiled ship of the wind, the only true machine' and then 'navigating now the waters of death'. This means it was a strong powerful fish that could do anything, but there is something he can't do, he can't escape death.

3.
A jump shift is when you talk about one time frame and then quickly switch from past, present and future. In this poem, after the life in the past in says now which brings it back to the future. It says 'well oiled ship, a true machine-navigating now the waters of death' and 'this torpedo, missile swam- now lying in front of me dead'. The poet uses this style to take you into the passed and then makes you feel bad when it brings you back to the future. In both of these it uses 'now' before the death part, using a jump shift to bring you back to the present.

Juxtaposition between Life and Death

Examples:
Direct: Swam-Dead, Tidal wave-Dead, Unflawed-Dead

Indirect: Man of War-Vegatables

The writer uses direct words to do the the juxtaposition, this makes you feel sorry for the fish because  the writer talks about its life like it was exciting but then just ends it quickly and suddenly and makes you think that his life was cut short and killed.

These peanuts are making me thirsty.

I was in a bar, there were lots of people, it was dark and gloomy and old fashioned. There was jazz music in the background. I knew no one, I asked the bartender for some water, he asked if I wanted some peanuts with the water, I replied no thanks, peanuts make me thirsty.

There was light chattering and jazz/ blues music in the background
It was gloomy and dark with only small lights

This Is Just To Say
BY WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

Purple- Symbol
Red- Taste Imagery
Blue- Metaphor

The poem I have found is called "This is just to say" and is by William Carlos Williams. In this poem there is lots of imagery. There is some taste imagery, it says "they were delicious, so sweet and so cold." There is sight imagery for example the plums were in the icebox, this is positioning. Also there was a symbol, it says "which you were probably saving for breakfast" I think this symbolises not thinking about the consequences of your actions. Overall I think the message of this poem is to think before you act.

The sick rose
William Blake

O Rose thou art sick.
The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.
